The UKRI and Peer-Review Routes Explained
Academic Research isn't one route — it's four. Here's which one probably applies to you. This is preparation guidance, not legal advice.
Four different paths, not one
Global Talent — Academic and Research is a single visa route, but there are four different ways to qualify for endorsement:
Route 1 — Academic or research appointment
Fast-track. You already have a qualifying job offer at an approved UK research institution.
Route 2 — Individual fellowship
You hold a recognised, competitively-awarded fellowship on the approved list.
Route 3 — Endorsed funder
Fast-track. You hold a qualifying research grant from an approved UKRI-endorsed funder.
Route 4 — Peer review
The standard, merit-based route — this is the one an evidence portfolio actually supports.
Which one applies to you?
If you already have a qualifying job offer or grant, Routes 1 or 3 are typically faster than building a full evidence portfolio. If not, Route 4 (Peer Review) is the real path — and it's what this platform's Academic Research workspace is built around.
